ABOUT SCARRING

ABOUT

Scarring is the body's natural response to injury, whether from cuts, burns, surgery, acne, or other skin traumas. When the skin is damaged, the body produces collagen fibres to repair the wound, resulting in the formation of scar tissue. While scars are a normal part of the healing process, they can vary in appearance and may be raised, sunken, or discoloured, depending on the type and severity of the injury. Scars can also cause discomfort, tightness, and emotional distress, especially when they are highly visible or located in sensitive areas.

SYPMTOMS

The appearance and symptoms of scars can vary widely based on the type of scar and the location on the body: Raised Scars (Hypertrophic or Keloid): These scars are thick, raised, and often red or darker than the surrounding skin. Keloid scars extend beyond the original injury site, while hypertrophic scars stay within the wound’s boundaries. Sunken Scars (Atrophic): These scars, often associated with acne or chickenpox, appear as depressions in the skin due to the loss of underlying tissue. Discoloured Scars: Scars may be lighter or darker than the surrounding skin, leading to pigmentation issues. These can occur with any type of scar but are especially common in people with darker skin tones. Tightness or Discomfort: Scars, particularly from burns or surgery, can cause tightness and discomfort, restricting movement, especially when they form on or near joints. Itching or Tenderness: Some scars, particularly keloids, can be itchy, tender, or even painful to the touch. The severity and visibility of scarring can have a significant impact on one’s self-esteem and quality of life, making effective treatment important.

Causes

Scarring occurs as a result of the skin’s natural healing process following an injury or trauma. Key factors that contribute to scarring include: Injury or Surgery: Any deep cut, laceration, or surgical incision can lead to scarring as the body repairs the damage with collagen fibres. Acne: Severe acne can result in atrophic scars, which are depressed areas in the skin, or hypertrophic scars, which are raised. Burns: Burn injuries often lead to significant scarring, which can be hypertrophic, keloid, or contracture scars that cause tightness. Infections or Inflammation: Skin infections, chickenpox, or inflammatory conditions like eczema can result in scarring, particularly if the skin is picked at or scratched. Genetics: Some individuals are more prone to developing keloid scars due to their genetic makeup, which influences how their skin heals. Delayed Healing: If a wound takes a long time to heal, due to factors like poor circulation, infection, or repeated trauma to the area, the risk of noticeable scarring increases. Understanding the causes of scarring can help in selecting the most appropriate treatment to minimise its appearance and improve skin health.

TYPES OF SCARRING

These are raised, red scars that are similar to keloids but do not go beyond the boundary of the injury. Treatments include injections of steroids to reduce inflammation or silicone sheets, which flatten the scar.
